Legacies of Enslavement: Girton Reflects
An account of initial findings
2025
This book is a collection of twelve articles originally published on the Girton College website as Girton Reflects. It presents, the principal findings made by the Girton College Legacies of Enslavement Working Group between 2020 and 2022, and published in 2023–24.
The book aims to make the Working Group’s findings more generally accessible and to contribute to reparative justice through the acknowledgment of these legacies. It brings together exploratory research, preserving most of the original articles, with updated reflections showing how understanding has evolved over time.
The Legacies of Enslavement Committee's considerable thanks go to those principally engaged in the investigations recorded in this book, Dr Hazel Mills and Dr Maggie Kalenak. Two further members of the original Woking Group, Dr Alastair Reid and the Rev. Dr Malcolm Guite, also wrote texts.
